Whilst the Anniversary may be more unique than your average mk4 golf, there are plenty of ways of making it go quicker, handle and stop better and stand out from the crowd.

Take a look below for some ideas...

Air filter - approx £40
The standard paper element can be replaced by a re-usable K&N element. This is a cotton gauze type filter with a 'tack' type oil that can be washed. Advantages are long service life and minimal airlfow restriction when dirty. They have been known to affect the VAG air mass meters though so caution is advised. Power gain is minimal on both the petrol and diesel.

Exhaust - approx £400-600
The Anniversary exhaust can be replaced by a stainless steel system from the catalyst back. This looks subtlely different with a 100mm tail pipe. On the diesel, the petrol valance needs to be fitted. Power and torque should be better, with a deeper exhaust note. For more power, milltek sell larger downpipes and sports (hi-flow but legal) catalysts.

Diverter valve - approx £90
The 1.8T engine suffers with diverter valve failure. This device vents prevents turbo compressor stall by venting compressed air when the throttle shuts. VAG use a crap bosch valve, easily replaced by a stronger item by Forge. No power gains but better response and no failures. Not applicable to the diesel engine as its not needed as diesels dont have throttles.

ECU remap - approx £400-900
Otherwise known as chipping, the fuel, boost and ignition maps are modified (fuel map on diesel) to produce more power. Gains of 30bhp and 40lbft of torque common, with great gain in torque on the diesels. Ideally set up on a rolling road to ensure the chipping has been successful. The ECU is removed from the car, the chip containing the maps is removed and a new one with altered maps is soldered in.

Tuning box - approx £500
With the advent of ECU controlled diesel fuel pumps, the tuning box has provided a neat solution. Intercepting the loom between ECU and pump, installation is quick and easy and results are similar to the chip conversions. The ECU does not have to be removed either and the tuning box can quickly be removed for servicing etc.

Uprated intercooler - £POA
Worth upgrading if your 1.8T is chipped. The intercooler cools the compressed air from the turbocharger, cooling it down and increasing its density and gaining power. The Forge intercooler is 27mm X 5mm X 15mm bigger than standard with excellent air flow characteristics inside the end tanks. No intercooler upgrade from Forge for the TDi yet.

Stage 3 upgrade - £POA
The ultimate - a bolt on kit from APR, consisting on new turbo, exhaust manifold, Injectors and ECU. This gives around 280BHP from the 1.8T engine without any modifications to the cylinder head or bottom end. You can go futher than this but this, but more power will need extensive engine strengthening to produce reliable power.
